What's Happening at Litchfield Parks & Recreation?
Nineteenth century American writer Edward Bellamy once noted, “If bread is the first necessity of life, recreation is a close second.” We here at Litchfield Parks and Recreation echo that statement every day. If you are not getting out there and recreating…it's time!!!

"Betty Ford" (aka "Rec Wreck")
After one month of searching for a name for the "new" 1993 Ford F-150 short bed pick-up truck, which Litchfield Parks and Rec Director Brent Hawkins will use to haul around things for their many events each year, a name has been chosen for the vehicle.
Hawkins ran a nation-wide contest in which there were 93 different names suggested for the truck. Judges in Connecticut, Michigan, Kentucky and West Virginia selected to pick the 16 finalist in the competition, then voting was done to get to the final four and the final pair.
The final vote went to "Betty" with 647 votes over the Rec Wreck with 517 votes. In typical Possum Queen Contest fashion Hawkins chided bribes for the naming rights of the truck as well seeing $625 dollars raised to date for the Possum Queen Foundation for the annual charity event which Hawkins and Billy Neller put on every New Year's Day. Thanks to the bribes brought in, they now have the official name of the truck "Betty - The Rec Wreck."
Anyone else wanting to send in a "bribe" may still do so by sending a check to: The Possum Queen Foundation, c/o Brent Hawkins, P.O. Box 263, Litchfield, CT 06759. Hawkins says, 'Betty the Rec Wreck' runs on gas, oil, wood alcohol and love!"
Thanks to all for playing, bribing and voting!!!

Summer Playground Camps
Litchfield Parks and Recreation will be opening their summer playground camps on Wednesday, June 23rd at Community Field beginning at 9:00 a.m.
Two camps will run simultaneously, with the children 5 and under going to the Pre-School Playground Camp, Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The fee for the camp is $65 a week. Daily drop-ins are also available to make things easier for the family.
Children aged 6 and over will go to the Sandlot Adventure Camp from 9:00 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Sandlot Adventure Camp is $80 a week, with daily rates of $16 per child. That breaks down to about $2.29 per hour for a child to have fun and learn in a supervised and safe environment.
All children should come to camp with their lunch, a snack, water, and a drink to get them through a day filled with activities.
The Summer Camps run through August 20th. In case of a passing rain shower, the camps will be moved to the Litchfield Firehouse, within a short walk of the camps, or to the Forman School when the day is a complete wash out.
The Sandlot Adventurers will travel to Sandy Beach on most Tuesdays, weather-permitting, for some fun in the water. The 4-H Club will be making several visits to camp as will “The Game Show Guy” Keith Alan, and we will go to fun places like Camp Getaway, The New Britain Rock Cats, Lake Compounce and more. Arts, crafts, sports, games and field trips will also compose the make-up of the camps, known as “Fun City!”
For more information, contact the Litchfield Parks and Recreation office at 567-7569. You may wish to register your child when you drop him or her off at Community Field at the camp site.

It was just a year ago when the new playscape at Community Field was opened to the public, but the complex opened without a shade structure as the project ran short of money due to the unexpected amount to dispose of the many hundred tires used in the previous generation playscape. Therefore the playscape opened with a area left vacant for an addition of a shade structure to shield children, parents and grandparents from the direct sun of the summer and many a visitor looked for a cool, shady place to hide last summer but found none.
But now the playscape plans will finally be completed due to a donation from the Litchfield Garden Club. This generous gift to the community will pay for the purchase and installation of a shade structure as well as two anchored concrete ADA picnic tables to be housed within it at the playscape, so those thirsting for a shady place to rest while others play need to thirst no more!
“We at Litchfield Parks and Recreation are overwhelmed by the kindness of all the members of the Litchfield Garden Club. I know this final piece of the puzzle will be the perfect fit for all of the families who come here to play and relax! We really cannot thank them enough!” said Brent Hawkins, Litchfield Parks and Recreation Director. “But really, I think they are as happy as we are to be able to help out the community in this way!”
Creative Recreation, the firm which put in the playscape, hopes to have the materials and supplies for the shade structure within 4 weeks and will schedule the installation as soon as possible. This will bring to a close a project begun by Litchfield Parks and Recreation with the planning stages in the spring of 2007, followed by the selection of the plan and contractors, permits through Planning and Zoning, Wetlands, and the Historic District Commission.
